Density
A commonly misused term when referring to foam products is density. Many of us have heard that the higher the density the firmer the foam. This is simply not the case. Density refers to the weight per cubic foot of foam, I.E.; 1lb. 2lb. etc. The higher the weight the longer the foam will keep its firmness. Please refer to the chart for some application examples.

Compression
Within the various densities, the foam can be purchased softer or firmer. This firmness is referred to as compression or IFD (Indentation Force Deflection) or ILD (Indentation Load Deflection). The higher the ILD # the firmer the foam. So it's possible to purchase what is commonly referred to as high density 2-3 lb. foam that is soft (like we use for toppers), or low density 1lb. foam (like we suggest for camping) that is firm. A general rule of thumb for most general applications is the thinner you go the firmer you go. For most upholstery work this will ensure you don't bottom out when you sit down.
Why a foam mattress?
Simply put, foam molds to your body's curves reducing and even eliminating pressure points that can cause you to toss and turn and wake up stiff and sore. Foam will never squeak like a spring mattress and or allow you to roll to the center (unless you want to). Foam is long lasting: our UltraCel™ foam comes with a 7 year warranty*, or Royalcel™ comes with a 5 year warranty*or ComfyCel™ comes with a 2 year warranty* ! Foam is hypo allergenic and can in many cases greatly reduce or eliminate many night time related allergies.
Since our inception in 1989 we have taken these marvelous features to a whole new level. We have developed a system that allows our trained sleep specialists to design a bed that is specifically suited to your height, weight, shape, and nature of problem, what's more is, that we can do this to both sides of the bed! If you and your spouse don't have the same size, weight, shape, or needs why would you expect to both be comfortable on the same firmness of bed? You can both have the bed you need and like and still be under the same covers. We have received literally 1000's of calls and comments from satisfied customers telling us that they've never slept better.
It's our mission to make sure you have a great night's sleep! To ensure you get that it's absolutely essential that you talk to one of our sleep specialists, or better yet come in and see us. The more information you give us about your needs the better equipped we are to serve you.
Mattress Myths and Facts
In today’s world of readily available information (which is often conflicting) it’s very difficult to know what really the best in a mattress or topper is. Here are our thoughts on these issues.
Myth
The “No Flip” mattress was designed to make your life easier, you buy the mattress and do nothing but sleep on it for the next 20 years or so.
Fact
“No Flip” mattresses won’t perform as advertised. The pillow tops on most mattresses are typically made from varying types of foams. Even the heaviest best quality foams in normal use usually start to break down in 7 – 10 years. This process is speeded up tremendously when the mattress can’t be flipped. That’s why all our mattresses can be flipped and/or has removable pillow tops that can be replaced without replacing the whole mattress.
Myth
My new no flip spring mattress warranty covers excessive softening.
Fact
We haven’t seen a mattress warranty since approximately 2003 that covers excessive softening. The warranties are usually worded that if the mattress loses
1 ½” or more of visible height, then it is warrantable. What we see everyday is clients who’ve purchased these no flip mattresses (and pillow top mattresses) that they find are unusable after a few years as they are too soft to sleep on. However the mattress hasn’t (and most likely won’t) lose 1 ½” of height. At John’s all our mattress warranties are simple. Depending on the quality you get a 3, 5 or 7 year warranty against excessive softening. No gimmicks.
